English books and Corn Tortillas

Well, for one week now I have been officially unemployed so that I can begin working on some of my own projects (which I’ll talk about soon I promise) but it has also given me time to start in on some summer reading.

I just finished A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers. This book was recommended to me by a roomate 3 or 4 years ago, and I recently picked it up along with a dozen other books while I was back visiting in the states. I find that to be one of my major objectives when I get back. That, and eating as much Mexican food as possible… Actually, my suitcase was overweight coming back because it was filled with both books, 2 large packs of corn tortillas, and a liter of “Tapatia” hot sauce I picked up at the grocery store on the way to the airport. I’m still working my way through the last few tortillas that I’ve been keeping in the fridge, and the hot sauce is actually nearly half disposed.

But anyway, it really is a great book that delivers a multitude of poignant insights into suffering, loss, and being human, and all the while making you laugh too.

I’ve started reading Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke, as well as Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. I think I brought enough books back to last me through the summer, so I’m not going to slow down any time soon.
